John Gilchrist Goes Back to Israel Again

Last month, John Gilchrist (2002-05) continued his on-again off-again relationship with the Israeli Premier League, leaving his Latvian team to play for Ironi Nahariya. This is his second stint with Nahariya; he played with them briefly at the beginning of last season also. I had a link and a quote from a news article all set to go, and then I realized it was an article from when he signed with Nahariya in 2006. So instead, here's a blog entry with the news and with a little more info about Gilchrist's recent playing history (in the transactions news at the bottom of the article), and here is his Israeli league player stats and profile page.

Gilchrist sucks.

Wikipedia notes one of the reasons he never succeeded was because he lacked maturity compared to his peers. As one of his profs at U Maryland while he was there I can attest that the wiki article couldn't be more on the money. Dude just thought basketball was the shit and school didn't matter. How'd that work out for ya JG the III?

John Gilchrist was the best college player in the nation during four games on the ACC Tournament in 2005. Best bar none. He won it single-handedly for the Terps. He should have left after that year and would have been a first round pick. Then some NBA team would have had a big stake in him and he would likely have made it. Instead, he got in a spat with Gary his next year, was benched, and got a rep as a trouble maker. No one drafted him and he has been bouncing around Europe and Israel ever since. But the kid can flat out play and deserves another NBA shot. He should be given a 10 day with the WIZ or brought to the Wiz next summer camp. If he has matured, he can play in the NBA. He has the body, the ball handling skills, and the shot. He is built like Gilbert but stronger. He just needs to mature.
